October updates from Story Box Library

BY JAMES BENNETT

October is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Story Box Library (SBL) is sharing stories to support children's mental health and wellbeing, featuring blogs showcasing libraries supporting mental health and wellbeing, and outdoor Activity Time ideas for children of all ages.

Watch SBL’s expert panel discussion event, Whose story gets to be shared? Creating a diverse library. Featuring experts and members of the Story Box Library team, our PD focuses on the importance of representation and diversity in children’s literature and practical ways to ensure all children are heard and seen through stories.

Story releases:

  • Girl from the Sea is a poetic ghost story from two of Australia's finest children's book creators, writer Margaret Wild and illustrator Jane Tanner. Read by actor Lisa McCune.
  • At a time when girls weren't encouraged to be bold and daring, Australian circus rider May Wirth lived by her own rules. So She Did: The Story of May Wirth is written by Simi Genziuk, illustrated by Reneé Treml and read by Nadine Garner.
  • More than anything in the world Arthur loves to play his violin, but he's too scared to do it in public because, well, what if he's bad? Arthur and the What-Ifs is created by Heath McKenzie and read by actor Gareth Reeves.
  • There is No Magic in this Book encourages young readers to look for magic in even the most ordinary places. Written by Michelle Macwhirter. Illustrated by Sophie Beer. Read by Captain Starlight.
