May updates from Story Box Library

BY JAMES BENNETT

As Story Box Library (SBL) is committed to continuing to make meaningful impacts and uplift First Nations voices through children’s literature and storytelling, SBL is sharing First Nations stories and short films for National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) and beyond.

Focusing on familiarising public libraries with SBL’s various features and functions, on Tuesday 4 May SBL held their first public libraries PD session. Watch this engaging session here.

To help library communities everywhere make the most of SBL’s Activity Time, here are some creative and inspiring ideas from subscribers.

Upcoming story releases:

  • Young Maggie doesn’t know how to handle her big feelings, until one night, when her mum shows her how to express them into the night sky. Howl is written by Kat Patrick, illustrated by Evie Barrow, and read by Robyn Butler.
  • Read by Tony Briggs and the next in SBL’s Indigenous Storytime Series, Brother Moon is a powerful story lovingly told by Great-Grandpa Liman to his great-grandson, Hippy-Boy, about the mysterious story of his brother and how it guides his connection to Country. Written by Maree McCarthy Yoelu and illustrated by Samantha Fry.
  • Written and read by Tony Wilson, Baa Baa Blue Sheep is a cheeky origin story of the famous nursery rhyme, in a collaboration series by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood.
  • Discover a gorgeous book for all those who love water dwellers, or following clues, in Heads and Tails: Underwater, written and illustrated by John Canty, and read by Sea Life Aquarium’s Bart Hamilton.

With 24/7 access to a world of stories, it’s Storytime, Anytime!
