Back to School
From ParentTV Creator and Mum, Sam Jockel

After 3 kids and 10 years of being a school mum one thing I can tell you is that going back to school after a long summer break can be very different depending on the year and the child. There are often many factors at play but mostly for my kids it has been about feeling connected and safe to their teacher and their peers.

The last few years have been so disruptive for our kids and for some of them those past anxieties and unknowns can get triggered when heading into a new school year.

The key to a calm transition back to school is our children feeling safe, supported and connected as they enter the new year. One of the ways I have tried to help my children with this is by organising a play date or a catch up with friends in their grade the week before school goes back. This helps encourage some positive connection heading into the new school year.

The main thing is to allow your child to experience whatever feelings they are having and remind them that you see them, that it’s OK to have those feelings and to support them to find a safe connection either in their teacher or some friends on their first day back to school.
