In Conversation with Peter Norris!

BY JAMES BENNETT

What inspired you to write this? Why now?

As a former ward of the state of Victoria, I attempted to testify at the Royal Commission into the historical treatment of State Wards. Unfortunately, I was unable to read my statement, as it was deemed that it would have a detrimental mental impact on the court staff.
This experience pushed me to write my story. To tell the truth, to reclaim my story and acknowledge the experience.
As I became a foster carer, I wanted to reflect on my own experience of my childhood and my father. I wanted others to see that they can be empowered to change their path(s). Your past and your trauma do not define your future. I wanted to encourage others to “step up” for themselves.

I was also able to reconcile the positive traits that I took from my father: protectiveness, enthusiasm, 100% effort and commitment, observance.

What was the writing process like?

It was a hard process. Sometimes it was just a sentence and a lot of emotions.

What is your favourite book, author or genre?

The Happiest Man on Earth by Eddie Jaku or Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton.

Where was your chilldhood library?

Port Hedland! I was a BIG comic book kid, particularly Richie Rich.

What is the BEST thing about libraries?

It’s just a magical place. You get complete access to such a wide genre of not only books, but just everything. You can discover new things, diversify your habits, just magic.

How do you organise your books at home?

By Size.

What book should everyone read at least once in their lifetime?

The Neverending Story by Michael Ende

The Bank Robber's Boy by Peter Norris is out 5th March, 2025.
