BY JAMES BENNETT
At James Bennett, we have delivered end-to-end procurement solutions to libraries for over 50 years.
The Sustainability Project (TSP) is a green initiative created in order to assist libraries in disposing of all unwanted weeded library material from any Public, School, Academic or Priavte Library.
Did you know?
Around 30 million printed books are held in collections by Australian Libraries. If libraries are weeding at the recommended rate that would equate to 4.5 million books or 1, 800 tonnes going to landfill each year.
We can help!
By working together in partnership, we have an opportunity for innovation in a way that sees us achieve stronger, healthier communities, reduce inequality, support literacy programs and achieve our global and personal sustainability goals.
We responsibly dispose of weeded library books through donations to communities in need, recycling into new products by pulping (once we have had the laminate removed), and for a number of items that we can sell to help generate additional funds for libraries, we make use of online marketplaces such as eBay or Amazon. These areas generate funds that are shared with the libraries to purchase new books and services or donated on the library’s behalf to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
To date:
Over 120 libraries have subscribed to TSP with extremely positive feedback. Together we have saved an estimated 225,000 books from landfill. The Indigenous Literacy Foundation has received $4,100 to support their program. A total of $15,600 has been donated or shared back to libraries to purchase additional materials for their libraries.
Registered libraries include:
