Story Box Library's 2023 Summer Story & Activity Challenge

Keep kids inspired with diverse stories and creative activities over the summer with Story Box Library’s ‘23 Summer Story and Activity Challenge

Designed to support the summer reading programs and book clubs already offered by public libraries, Story Box Library connects families with a world of stories by extending your library’s collection anywhere there’s an internet connection - including the back garden, local park or even a beach tent - and also encouraging them to visit their library and connect with their communities.

Story Box Library is excited to launch Isaiah Firebrace’s first children’s book, Come Together: Things Every Aussie Kid Should Know about the First Peoples.

Drawing on Isaiah’s personal story and culture, and inspired by his petition to the Australian Government calling for Aboriginal history to be taught in every classroom, this is an essential book for young and older readers.

Assisting libraries in promoting Story Box Library to patrons in their community, don’t forget about our promotional resources for printed and digital use! Download ready-to-use assets and resources, encouraging patrons to use Story Box Library at the library or in the comfort of their own home.

Engage children in learning activities and linked stories with a brand-new Resource section! The new website update hosts all of Story Box Library’s helpful resources including Activity Time, PD events, promotional materials and more, in a vibrant new format.

Upcoming story releases:

  • The perfect picture book for children with a big imagination, We Found a Cat is a laugh-out-loud story of a little girl and a little boy who find a furry friend. Created and read by Heidi McKinnon.
  • Created and read by Jasmine Seymour, and told in English and Dharug, Open Your Heart to Country is a moving account of re-connection to Country from a First Nations perspective. Sharing the nourishing power of returning home and being immersed in the language of Country, this story invites readers to reflect on the importance of place, not only for First Nations’ peoples but for everyone.
  • Author and storyteller Isaiah Firebrace, a Yorta Yorta and Gunditjmara man, establishes a foundation of First Nations knowledge with 20 key topics. Inspired by his petition to the Australian Government calling for Aboriginal history to be taught in every classroom, Come Together: Things Every Aussie Kid Should Know about the First Peoples connects us to each topic through Isaiah’s personal story and culture, from the importance of Elders to the Dreaming. Illustrated by Mununjali and Fijian artist Jaelyn Biumaiwai.
  • Kind: A Call to Care for Every Creature is a unique celebration of living things of many kinds - and the kindness we can show them as we wander through the world. A stunning and lyrical masterpiece from exciting Australian talent Jess McGeachin and read by Leah Vandenberg.

Thank you to all who made submissions to the 2022 Librarian Storyteller of the Year award. Story Box Library received entrants from across Australia and New Zealand, with a fantastic passion for literature and knack for creating wonder through storytelling!

The winner and finalists will be announced on Friday 25 November, so keep an eye out on social media and newsletter updates for the announcement.
