Productivity Commission's final report

3 January 2017

The Productivity Commission released its final report into Intellectual Property Arrangements on December 20.  This report recommends the adoption of a US style fair use exception and the repeal of parallel importation restrictions (PIRs) by the end of 2017.
The Australian Libraries Copyright Committee (ALCC) has welcomed the fair use exception recommendation stating on December 21 that “(t)hese recommendations will transform Australia’s copyright system into a world leader, respecting creators and ensuring they are protected, while also recognising the importance of access and flexibility for all of society.”
However, groups still opposed to these recommendations include the Copyright Agency, Australian Publisher’s Association, Australian Bookseller’s Association, Australian Society of Authors, Australian Literary Agents Association and the Print Industry Association of Australia.
