Florida's Fake Borrowers

4 January 2017

A couple of senior library staff at East Lake County library in Florida have been discovered to have created fake patron identities to borrow thousands of books in order to boost circulation rates and avoid the titles from being weeded out of their collection.  BBC.com reports that “some of the titles were checked out and returned within an hour”. The fake borrower statistics increased the library’s circulation numbers by 3.9%. These readership figures are used in the calculation of Library funding by the state.
